Even though Arrietty is small, I don’t get how her body can make such a BIG teardrop.
When my fiance and I first saw the liquid effects in the movie (the first time was when Arrietty’s mother was pouring tea), we simultaneously looked at each other and squee’d (well, I squee’d, anyway, my fiance just smiled and said “Shh! I know!”)
You see, the reason the liquid in the movie is so “globular” is that there is a threshold of surface tension (sorry about the possible inaccuracy of this, I am not by any means an expert on fluid dynamics), dependent on such factors as viscosity and tube/pipe size, by which, to put it simply, small amounts of liquid create cohesive droplets.
The Borrowers’ vessels for liquid, as well as Arrietty’s tear ducts, are so small that the surface tension of the tiny volumes of liquid flowing through them cause them to form what are called “pendant drops”, which are held in their lovely round shape by said surface tension.
And details like this are why I love Miyazaki so.
O_O…….good enough for me, thank you for the explanation.^^

Miyazaki IS one of the greatest directors, I’m not surprised he put so much detail into his craft

And plus, Miyazaki always uses oversized teardrops. It’s kinda his thing, and we all know that what Miyazaki wants,...
